Services:  Funeral services will be held Saturday April 14, 2007 at 11:00 am at the Ellington Congregational Church 72 Main St. Ellington with the Rev. Don Bailey Francois officiating. Burial will follow in Ellington Center Cemetery.

Barbara (Allan) Campbell, 89, of Vernon, passed away peacefully Saturday March 31, 2007 at Fox Hill Nursing Center in Vernon. She was the widow of the late Francis N. Campbell. Born in Boston MA she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Marguerite (Sawyer) Allan, and was raised in Needham MA. Barbara graduated from Bridgewater State Teachers College, Class of 1939 and began teaching in a one room School house in Castle Hill, ME. She returned to Massachusetts teaching at the Ridge Hill School in Norwell. In 1942 Barbara answered the call for the war effort and began training as a Weather Observer and Meteorologist in Washington D.C. and Pittsburgh PA and eventually became the first woman employed by the U.S. Weather Bureau. She served in the Department of Commerce Weather Bureau at stations in Flushing, NY, Albany, LaGuardia Field, Logan Field and Brainard Field until 1954. She eventually came to Connecticut working for the newly formed Travelers Weather Service and appeared on both W.T.I.C. radio and WFSB (channel 3) for 21 years of dedicated service before retiring. Barbara was a former member of the Immanuel Congregational Church in Hartford. She leaves her sisters-in-law, Barbara W. Allan of N.H. and Irma Allan in FL; a niece, Diana Keune and her husband Edward, of Ellington and several other nieces and nephews.
