Ranger Andy (Orville Andrews)

From James Stewart:

The man was a dear friend and one of the most talented people I have ever known.  I have so many memories of all the programs with Andy which included the huge library of songs written by this man.  Andy came here from New York where he worked as a writer on the Perry Como show.  He created the character Ranger Andy for a Perry Como Christmas special, and the rest is history.  He wrote all the songs that he sang on the daily broadcast and I can probably sing them all.
Great memories!

From Dick Bertel:
Andy was reluctant to talk about his career in detail, I found.  I wanted very much to interview him for my radio show and he agreed.  I think it was sometime in the mid 60s.

Yet, when I asked him about his days as a big band singer, or his work on the Al Pearce Gang network radio show, which I listened to faithfully when I was growing up, he was almost shy in his brief responses. The entire interview lasted just 15 minutes and I never aired it.

However, with him that night was Jim Jordan, better known as Fibber McGee, and he gave me an interview which I saved and later incorporated into the Golden Age of Radio series which we ran in the 1970s.

I've always felt that I failed Andy somehow by not being able to open him up. For me an interview like that would be priceless today.
