Downtown Hartford Antennas

When WTIC-AM started broadcasting at 500 watts, the transmitting towers were on top of the 26 Grove St. building next to the Travelers Tower in downtown Hartford.

WTIC-AM transmitted from Hartford until July 29, 1929. On July 30, 1929 WTIC-AM started transmitting from Avon, CT at 50,000 watts. It is still the largest station in southern New England.

This postcard also clearly shows the 200' tall self supporting tower that sat on top of the American Industrial Building across from G Fox on Main St. used by WTHT, the Hartford Times station, when it first went on the air.

WTHT's studios were in the same building through the 40s. It's to the far right of the photo.

Just to the left of that is another tower which I suspect is the guyed Linco tower that was installed on top of 555 Asylum (later the home of channel 18) which is where WTHT moved to before their demise.

Those are the only three AM station towers that were in Hartford according to my research. ~John Ramsey
